Application Process & Interviews at ACT Government

8.8
8.8 rating for Recruitment, based on 6 reviews
Please describe the interview process and assessments.
As expected for graduate programs, though slightly delayed in the year.
Graduate, Canberra
The initial written submission doubled as the written assessment, then there was online psychometric testing, then there was a one-way recorded interview, and finally there was a day of assessments that included a recorded group task, and an interview with a panel relevant to your field.
Midlevel, Canberra
Online application, group task and individual interview with panel, all over Webex. Written word response task. All doable. Given 10 min prep time for individual interview which was awesome.

What questions were you asked in your interviews?
I was asked about my values, behaviours, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Graduate, Canberra
I can't remember. I think there were questions about what kind of work I wanted to do and why, and why I chose to apply to the ACTPS. There may have also been a question about conflict resolution in the workplace.
Midlevel, Canberra
Classic - teamwork, problem solving, conflict, and two more.

Do you have any specific tips and advice for candidates applying to your company? How would you recommend they best prepare?
Read the ACTPS core values and behaviours framework and aim to find examples in previous work/university experiences that demonstrate those values and behaviours.

Make sure you know why you want to work in the ACTPS and what you want to do there. What are you passionate about and how can that passion improve Canberra? Applying to other federal government graduate programs I wasn't excited about and going through their assessment processes was a major help for me. Getting familiar with the process and making mistakes to learn from will be a major help when it comes to the assessment for the program you're actually excited for. I was asked a question in a previous interview that I couldn't answer well and when I was asked effectively the same question for the ACTPS interview I was ready. Also, get some volunteer experience, put it on your CV, and mention it in your interview. Showing your passion and personal interest / investment in executing your values makes you stand out.
