Job Satisfaction at BCD Group

As a junior structural engineer at BCD, my role involves a mix of design, analysis, and project coordination. On a day-to-day basis, I work closely with senior engineers and other construction industry professionals to develop structural designs for various projects. I often collaborate with architects and project managers to find cost-effective, client-oriented solutions that integrate well with the overall project. My responsibilities include preparing calculation packages, sketches, specifications, and reports, conducting site visits to monitor construction progress, and addressing any technical issues that arise. This combination of hands-on design work, teamwork, and problem-solving makes my role both challenging and rewarding.

I get to work on a variety of projects and get a good mix of office and field work.

You run through calculations and sketches everyday. As a new graduate, you are often tasked with helping out around the office as well eg: filling up the fridge, running errands etc

Day-to-day I complete structural engineering calculations, design sketches, and reports. This is achieved whilst communicating and coordinating with the design team to produce multi-disciplinary design solutions for our clients.

Consists of meetings / catchups with seniors, site visits (ground investigations and site inspections) and technical report writing.

My day varies from pre plan checks to more in depth reports providing a variety of skill level

Site testing, started learning how to do lab testing, and report writting.

I am a structural draftsman, on a daily basis i am working in Revit drawing buildings /structures and creating plans based off client briefs and engineers instructions for building consent, design purposes or construction. It is a very rewarding and creative outlet for me, it is also very interesting learning about the structure as a whole and its components.
