Company Description

BlueScope is a technically advanced supplier of steel and steel products in Australia. We are an inclusive organisation and every day we showcase our technology and expertise throughout the world.

Job Description

Our Manufacturing business in Port Kembla has an opportunity for several energetic, highly motivated, results-oriented Materials Engineering students to join our team. With a combination of part-time study and part-time work, you will be provided one day per week to attend classes. You will be available to commence with BlueScope in January 2021.

Materials engineering provides a link between science and the other branches of engineering. It is the study of the relationship between the structure and properties of materials and their economic application.

You will rotate through various departments so that you gain a good appreciation of the steel-making process from smelting the ore to conversion to liquid iron and steel and then forming the raw steel into a finished product—fit for use across Australia.

As a Materials Cadet, you will be expected to apply scientific principles to solve a range of technological problems, across physics, chemistry and mathematics. You will also assist in the design and control of the processes for producing, shaping, treating and testing materials.

Who are we looking for?

As an excellent communicator and team player, you will have strong organisational skills and the ability to balance university and your varied work tasks. You will see the value in gaining practical, hands-on experience in the workplace whilst undertaking your theoretical training. You should also meet the following criteria:

  • You will currently be in Year 12 and be eligible to study Materials Engineering at UOW in 2021; or
  • You will currently be in your first or second year of study in Materials Engineering at UOW.

What are the benefits?

This position is an opportunity to put your skills on display and make your mark in an iconic Australian business, with access to the following:

  • training, development and further career opportunities; and
  • a competitive salary whilst you study.
