As a Human Resources Officer at BMD, you have the opportunity to get exposure to all aspects of human resources from recruitment, conflict management, employee relations, training and development, onboarding and much more!

What's your job about?

I work as a Human Resources Officer at Australia’s largest privately owned civil contractor, the BMD Group.

As a Human Resources Officer at BMD, you have the opportunity to get exposure to all aspects of human resources from recruitment, conflict management, employee relations, training and development, onboarding and much more! You have the support and guidance from the team to learn, develop and grow your knowledge and skills.

A day in the life as a Human Resource Officer at BMD is diverse and no two days are the same. My daily work consists of doing recruitment which entails posting job advertisements, shortlisting applications, searching for potential candidates on LinkedIn, conducting interviews and completing phone screens. Additionally, you get to build a strong rapport with all managers across Australia.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Brisbane and went to a local high school where I enjoyed playing team sports and found my passion for business. During high school, I did a business management subject that I enjoyed and found a passion in marketing and human resources. I went to university and studied a Bachelor of Business with a major in Human Resources and Marketing. Throughout university, I worked casually at a local medical centre. I started looking for a job in my field of study towards the end of my last semester and was lucky enough to get a graduate role once I completed my studies. I have been working as a Graduate at BMD for the past 18 months and haven’t looked back.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, of course! The great thing about Human Resources is that there are so many different aspects of it and skills that can be transferred from other industries and roles. One of the main characteristics that I have found working in human resources is that you need to be a people person and have good communication.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love coming to work each day and working with my team. As a BMD Graduate, you get the opportunity to participate in our Graduate Foundations Modules, which entails three modules where we bring all Graduates across Australia together to participate in different activities, meet the senior leadership team and build our knowledge and relationships within the business. It’s a great opportunity to meet all the Graduates across Australia and have a few drinks, and socialise together.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Take the time to enjoy the university life of studying and enjoy having some free time here and there before stepping into the real world of work
  • Take the time to meet new people and ask questions around what they are studying to get an idea of other options out there in case you aren’t enjoying what you’re doing
  • Organise and plan out your assignments and exams in advance.
