About Waste Management

Waste Management is New Zealand's leading resource recovery, recycling, and waste and environmental services provider, driven by our focus on safety, sustainability, and service and underpinned by innovation. They provide recycling and resource recovery services, solid waste management, liquid and hazardous waste collection, treatment, and disposal.

Your role

The Waste Management Technical Services Division is a specialist team of highly qualified staff with purpose-built processing facilities and specialised Dangerous Goods transport. Waste Management Technical Services can process hazardous and liquid wastes safely and with full compliance with government and council laws and by-laws governing liquid and hazardous waste disposal.

They have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate to join the Technical Services team. Based in East Tamaki, you will be part of an exciting career path opportunity where you will be building valuable hands-on skills in a technical and manufacturing environment.

Your journey with them involves rotating through the various key areas of our division.  You will be assigned a “buddy” and will gain experience in areas such as hazardous, medical, solvent recovery, parts washer, maintenance, finance, sales, customer service, logistics and process safety.  After rotating through each key area, you will be providing insight into what you have learnt and suggesting any areas for improvement.

As this is my first job in my career path after leaving university, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of day-to-day responsibilities. I have been really enjoying the work and am interested in what I do, the only downside is there is quite a bit of Maths involved which is not much strong point, I am more of a Science and English person.

At the moment, I'm doing a variety of smaller things but there is no definitive responsibility that I have. I enjoy doing what I do but I do not like sitting around doing nothing, which of recently has been the case for some days.

I am quite satisfied with my work. I enjoy seeing what I have created being used and it helping and improving the way we do things.

Pros and cons of working at WM New Zealand

Pros

  • Good people—I feel very welcomed and a part of the team.

  • Large business, lots to learn, variety of projects.

  • They allow me to move the hours I work around to fit personal commitments and issues.

  • WM does what it can to reduce environmental impacts from landfill gas capture to electric fleets.

  • There is a huge focus on each other's diversity; special days in different cultures are often celebrated.

Cons

    • There is quite an issue with the communication, but this is something that is being worked on.

    • Yet to have a big responsibility, and ambiguity in my role within the business.

    • Sometimes there are lulls in the work available. This does allow for creative thought, but it can feel slow.

    • Some of the older/smaller sites are left behind in terms of office space, location, and facilities.

    • The pay is as expected considering I am a graduate, but I know there is potential for an increase.
