Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I think there are quite a few avenues, however at some point, there is a ceiling. As this is a business where people tend to stay, that makes it tough to move

There are always opportunities being promoted on our internal webpage that everyone has access too. a lot of the time you just need to put your hand up and say you are keen. Work hard, show that you can do your job well and help develop new team members.

The best part about Mainfreight would be promotion from within. There is so many opportunities whether it be just within your city or worldwide that you can take your career. The first year is the same for most grads, which is spent on the floor, learning the business from the bottom up. There you can move into what ever roles might resonate with you. For me, an opportunity came up in claims after 12 months working on the floor which was a great step to work into a sales career. Now I am an account manager, able to talk about the topic of claims (which is always a touchy subject) much more in depth with customers and help them through the process a lot easier. I also have the knowledge and relationships I gained from being on the floor. Knowing what is feasible and how the business works at the base level.

Confident and not at the same time, promotion and career progression in my current branch wont happen for me unless get more work and a bigger facility as a branch, cause that then creates more jobs and more responsibilities which entail builds your career. Promotion is possible in my company, but there's hardly ever any good positions going on our career board.

A lot of luck involved with my particular progression, but overall, plenty of opportunity all over the network, like anything, can be a lot of reliance on timing for certain roles

Have moved up into the office (started on the floor in the operations). Although have been stuck in my role ever since moving from the operations. Have put my hand up for a new role but was unsuccessful. Would be better if there was more opportunity for rotations around different areas of the business to learn and grow. However i'm quite lucky as I've been able to experience different areas in my role in the admin team.

Plenty, we only hire execs/managers from within. We pride ourselves that the leaders in our business know the business and are from the business by having this opportunities are endless. Regarding what it takes to move up its really how you are as a person you dont have to be loudest in the room ( Im def not) but being trustworthy goes along way here.

I have been fortunate to progress 4 times since joining all the way to Sales Manager. There is never a shortage of opportunity for those that wish to take it.

I am very lucky, I have progressed really well in 5 years. Hard work pays off.

Showing you have enthusiasm, passion and a great work ethic will help you move up. If you have the drive to take the next role and put your hand up you will get noticed. You may not be ready, in typical "Sink or swim' Mainfreight style but you have to start somewhere because you can't always be 100% ready for the next opportunity and if you want to succeed you will. I was in the Customer Services and Sales support role for a while and I was sitting there waiting to progress at MF Auckland but was held back so I was very thankful for an Opp at DF Auckland and found my career progress quite quickly under a new sales manager who believed in me and a supportive team around me.

There is always opportunity for change and movement - the company is large enough that there is lots of space to move around until you find your best fit. It takes the right attitude and good work ethic to help move into certain roles. Everyone starts off in the engine room and it is the most important step in the journey - here is where you learn the heart of the business so be prepared to spend some time here before moving into a more office based role.
