Training & Personal Development at Mainfreight New Zealand

8.3
8.3 rating for Training, based on 15 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
I have been lucky to do quite a few courses and have a few mentors. However, not everyone is in that position, so it would be good to ensure everyone has someone in the network. I would be willing to be involved in mentoring those in the business.

You get assigned a mentor you can go to. The team are always willing to help when you ask for it and will show you how to do it rather tell you. Put you on courses to get the required qualifications (forklift, Dangerous Goods).

Most training within the first year is very informal bar the Mainfreight induction course and forklift course. Learning from others and being a sponge is so important. Other formal training is also on offer later down the line. Such as professional selling skills, future leaders coursed and much more on offer. The most valuable skills I have found are from learning from the legends that have been around for years. There is so much knowledge out there if you just ask.

Training for me has been great, I've received a lot of support for training and new tasks that I need to do and I am always assured by my BM that is there is any additional training I need to ask, even if it is external training.

They get you involved straight away in your role, for me that's how I learn best! The development programme is really good, it's flexible but will good direction of what needs to be achieved.

We have lots of courses on offer and there is some kind of personal development course to be put on each year

The old sink or swim way of learning is still very much the 'Mainfreight way', and this always suits certain curious characters who aren't afraid of getting stuck in, but with the younger generations starting to come through, a lot more care might be needed during the on-boarding process, a bit more 'warmth' and more clear cut process may be useful among the branches.

Have been put on a few internal courses. Learnt lots about the business & also how to deal with difficult situations, customer service, how to delight the customer, manage expectations, stress management, resilance & team building.

Alot of informal training ( this is changing through) but was really good. Informally working through different operations you deal with various different customers/systems and you also deal with different people, when you do move into a more of a leadership role its nothing new.

Inductions are super awesome and a great way to learn a bit about everything at MF. Mine happened quite late so would have been useful after a couple of months at MF. DG courses/ forklift courses/ truck licences are all useful tools no matter what the role. PSS Sales courses are extremely important for Sales team!Russell is great and I learnt heaps.

Lots of training available on various topics. I have done a Dangerous Goods course, a time management course and a Professional Selling Skills course. Lots of on the job training when changing roles too - customer service skills!
