Pros & Cons

  • Delivering major projects that shape cities and impact the lives of those around me. Being part of UGL/CIMIC has given me the chance to work on the Cross River Rail project which is helping to define the future of Brisbane.
  • I feel that I am working with professionals that I can learn from and that they will push me to take on new and challenging opportunities. Also treated me with respect.
  • The people I have worked with have provided me with valuable experience, even as an undergrad and treated me with respect and as a proper employee despite my experience. I've been provided with plenty of opportunities at various types of projects and have been surrounded by a great team each time.
  • I've been provided with a lot of opportunities and have felt supported to some degree in every role I've worked in. The female representation and leadership is also higher than what I've seen from other contractors of the same level
  • It gives me an international perspective of working in this industry. I feel so respected to work as a woman in here, as they have created a woman in construction group to gather the female power in the company.
  • The large amount of opportunities to gain experience in different areas and projects due to the great portfolio of work and diversity of the company.
  • Usual office hours and pay is great to match hours worked. However, the hours on site can be much longer and the domestic site allowance does not cover all the overtime that is worked.
  • Not enough resources/people to get job done successfully. May need to do overtime to get the job complete.
  • Working in such a large company it can feel like being a small cog in a large machine. It can be hard to navigate the business and define a career path.
  • Transitioning between projects is not always smooth
  • Although rotations are stated as part of your graduate program, I found it very difficult to get the managers to allow me to rotate into other departments to pursue other opportunities.
  • Office culture is lacking, maybe due to COVID but unsure has haven't been here for long enough

My current manager is great, always has time for me and is willing to support and nurture my growth in the company. He is a great mentor, he always gives me some sort of recognition and awarded me with a great contract at the end of the program for my hard work

Corporate Social Responsibility
Prioritizing the employment of local residents at our projects and providing training, we aim to directly benefit local workers, their families, and the community, and what I do personally is help local workers with work if they need help

Culture

Culture
Work culture is very open and accessible. Organisiational structure is in place for functional reasons and is largely disregarded outside the office.

Diversity

Diversity
The company do a lot of online and in-person events to talk about issues or to celebrate culture, but nothing above and beyond. They do have tracking on their internal website for women and indigenous people however they are currently not meeting their targets.

As a grad I have been involved with delivery technical services to people on site. This has included collaborating with people on site to find solutions to occurring issues and going through appropriate procedures to implement them. I have also been involved with project quality and completions team.

Management

Management
My managers have all been highly skilled and friendly, which has been good for someone learning. They are more than happy to sit down and chat to explain concepts or what I need to do. The issue I have found with my managers is they are usually extremely busy, so it can be hard to catch them to ask these questions.

The office has been recently refurbished, and is in a fantastic location with good facilities - though it was better before our building revoked our car-park allotment. Dress code is relaxed professional - most people wear jeans and suits are only worn by executives on special occasions.

Application online with supporting documents - prerecorded interview question responses - video interview including a short technical presentation - Follow up with an offer

Salary
The salary is quite satisfactory, but for bonuses, there is only a hardship allowance. The hardship allowance in Indonesia is only available for projects outside Java. Maybe consider giving another bonus to the project inside Java

Training
I have received the mandatory training but at some points the requirement have not been preempted very well and may end up being last minute. This depends on which division or team you may be part of

Work Hours
My current team is pretty set on working in the office, 8.5 hours a day mon-fri. It is standard. I would enjoy more flexible especially seeing as I have a long commute to work, but the general consensus is they prefer people working from the office.

Sustainability
As said before, there is a Renewables division which is helping but it is not a large focus of the company. There are initiatives to save paper and water but nothing substantial.
